October 14, 2022 News and Notes

• Raleigh:  Five killed, two injured.  Shooter was 15 and is in critical condition.
• The 2021 women's Boston Marathon winner, Diana Kipyokei, will be stripped of the championship after becoming the tenth Kenyan runner to test positive for triamcinolone acetonide in the last ten years.  Only two non-Kenyan runners have tested positive for that substance in the same time period.  Makes me wonder if we have something which is about to blow distance running wide open here.   
• Five years ago, the burgeoning American fandom of New Japan Pro Wrestling was being introduced to probably the hottest Young Lion in the company's recent history.  Today, it was announced Katsuya Kitamura passed away, age 36.
• Kitamura was about ready to go on excursion after one of the most celebrated Young Lion tenures in recent memory, culminating in a seven-match series where, though he lost every match (as is tradition), he was showcased throughout late 2016 and early 2017.
• However, after his seventh match of the series, while many were awaiting which promotion would get Kitamura on international excursion, he disappeared (various reports indicate a car accident or a concussion incident...  or SOMETHING ELSE...) and never wrestled again, for New Japan or for anyone else!
• A grocery merger worth over $25 billion:  Kroger and Albertson's will merge operations.
• Brian Tuohy is so disinterested in the NFL's continuing bullshit, he's scaling back his "NFL Season Update" page to approximately biweekly.
• British actor Robbie Coltrane has passed away.  He was 72.
• Also, Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Bruce Sutter has passed, probably of cancer in hospice, at age 69.  (Hat-tip to my anonymous baseball-historian friend for the information.)
• A bit of "rigging in reverse" in Yankee Stadium this morning, with the delayed Game 2 with the Yankees.  Gioncarlo Stanton took a pitch at least a ball low as strike 2, which would have been ball 4.  Next pitch LEAVES THE YARD for 2-0 to the Yankees in the first!
• And very nearly AGAIN in the third!  Two on and two out for the Yankees, 1-1 pitch, a ball low for strike 2.  Count gets to 3-2, which Donaldson laces to left by the left fielder catches it at his shins for out #3.
• Golden Sombrero for Judge.  Game enters extra innings 2-2 -- and there's no free runner in the playoffs.
