October 2, 2022 News and Notes

  • Unspeakable tragedy in a soccer match in Indonesia on Saturday.  Crowd unrest after a league match led to tear gas, which led to a stampede which has now killed at least 125.  When are people going to learn that you -- somehow -- have to temper some of the passions which are related to The Beautiful Game?
  • Entering the Sunday Night game, the Barfs are up by one game in the NL East over the LOLMets.  Far more importantly, the season series is 9-9.  If the Braves win tonight, they all but win the NL East -- two up and the tiebreaker.  If the Mets win, they have the tiebreaker with three days to play.
  • The six playoff teams are set in the AL:  Astros #1 seed, Yankees #2, Cleveland #3, with Toronto, Tampa Bay, and Seattle the wildcards to join Cleveland playing next weekend -- that order is to be determined.
  • In the NL:  Dodgers #1 seed and best record in baseball.  NL East winner is the #2, Cardinals #3, NL East loser #4...
  • And then we still have a situation with four days to go.  San Diego is 2 up on Philadelphia and 3 up on Milwaukee.  San Diego's Magic Number to get in is 2.  Milwaukee is one game out right now with four days to play.
  • The Manchester Derby was an eventful one today, but Manchester United (who hasn't played a Premier League match in OVER A MONTH) came out absolutely flat, and lost 6-3 as a result.
  • As part of reviewing (and revising) the NFL's concussion protocols, Tua is going to get interviewed over the Sunday-Thursday issues regarding his double-concussion.  I hope he also adds the pressure to play, not only by his team but by the league itself!
  • JJ Watt had a heart procedure this week.
  • Terry Bradshaw has revealed he's fighting cancer.
