October 16, 2022 News and Notes

  • Because the University of Tennessee already paid a $50,000 fine for a court-storming in 2006, the penalty for the mob scene after they beat Alabama is $100,000 -- and the school is attempting to crowdfund that and the cost of new goalposts, because the mob took the goalposts and threw them in the river.  Here's a hint:  You're not stopping the practice until a win like that is reversed through forfeiture.  That 100K will be more than repaid through the footage of that event.
  • Tennessee is now the #3 team in the country, Alabama #6.
  • There is going to have to be a housecleaning after the 110-win Dodger team got eliminated 3-1 by a team they went 14-5 against.  The GM probably should go, at least a third of the roster is probably gone (most of the bullpen, probably Turner and Bellinger, and who knows from there?), and there is significant want for Dave Roberts' head, justified or otherwise.
  • After 3-6 in the first round, higher seeds are 7-8 (1-3 eliminated in both NL, 3-0 and 2-2 in the AL) in the DS round.
  • Group phase over in the League of Legends Asia Invitational.  Errr, World Championship.  North America went 3-15.  The final eight are all four Korean teams, three Chinese teams, and one European team -- the combination of which went 29-3 against the rest of the field.  Plenty of good seats should be available for the quarterfinals next week in New York, the semifinals the week following in Atlanta, and the Grand Final in San Francisco.
  • There is now already serious talk of removing the joke North American "LCS" (more like AA for players who can't hack it -- the 15 players on the 3 NA teams had only 2 US players between them) from the weekends and having them play during the week.
  • My solution:  ABOLISH THE WHOLE THING.  For the LCS:  Combine it with the rest of the Western Hemisphere Wildcard leagues and have one Western Hemisphere league.
  • For the current Worlds:  Make the World Championships six Chinese and six Korean teams.  Create an International Championship, understood to be several levels below Worlds, with whatever is the Western Hemisphere or LCS vs. the EU (4 each).  And then a Wildcard Championship with whoever is left.
