October 20, 2022 News and Notes

  • The head of the Hearst Media Group for television is effectively predicting that if NBC abandons the 10-11 Eastern/Pacific hour for prime time, the remaining two national networks which still use it will follow suit.  Makes me wonder when we might get the end of one or more of at least the three majors.
  • Another piece of evidence Kevin McCarthy will not be Speaker of the House if the Republicans win the House in three weeks:  Bloomberg reports McCarthy does not, at this point, believe there is a case to impeach President Biden...
  • It appears as if the first casualty of the CM Punk/Elite brawl from All Out is now known:  Reports have it that Punk's trainer Ace Steel has been fired.
  • There is apparently significant litigation in the event as well, however -- litigation which might end all four relevant wrestling careers (Punk, Kenny Omega, and The Young Bucks).
  • The winner of a 50/50 raffle drawing for $14,000 with the Washington Commanders at their season opener is claiming the check bounced.  And my surprise is...  non-existent.
  • Tense moments at the NFL Owners Meetings between Robert Kraft and Jerry Jones...
  • ... after which Jones was the only dissenting vote against Roger Goodell's new pay package for being Der Kommissar...
  • In the first win for Houston in the ALCS, they struck out 17 Yankees.  Only two Astros struck out.  Largest discrepancy in postseason history.
  • This week is the first week of the Jeopardy! Second Chance Tournament.  A winner of a two-game total-score match tomorrow and Friday will meet the winner of a similar match on October 27 and 28 in the first round of the 2022 Tournament of Champions, which will begin October 31.
  • The semifinals, with Matt Amodio, Amy Schneider, and Mattea Roach, begin on Election Night (or will they move that to the night after?), November 8...
  • Three shows after that will begin the Finals, in which the three survivors will face each other until someone wins three shows for the $250,000 grand prize.
  • Liz Truss resigns as British Prime Minister, and it appears Trump-like Boris Johnson will return to the post.  A party election is scheduled for Monday.
  • Cristiano Ronaldo was suspended from Manchester United for Saturday's Premier League fixture for leaving the bench early against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night.  It's clear he's gone, probably in the January transfer window.
  • With Game 2 of the ALCS today, Thursday Night Football, and first-week regular-season games in the NHL and NBA, it is only the 27th time that all four major sports go on simultaneously.
  • With the 3-0 win by Korea's JD Gaming over Europe's Rogue -- every non-Korean/Chinese team has been eliminated from the League of Legends World Championships -- to the tune of a 16-3 record for the Koreans and Chinese over everyone else.  One Chinese team got eliminated in Groups, and they even went 2-2 against the others, and Fanatic got one game off of T1.  Just get rid of the rest of the world -- this a two-country e-sport.
