Finally had that talk with some of the readers of my blog -- the same ones which suggested the World Cup and Olympic Russia boycotts.
It is for all the obvious reasons that could be discussed at length:
- Homophobia/transphobia
- Sportswashing
- The hundreds, if not thousands, killed in the preps for this event
- The rampant corruption at all levels of the event
- The Muslim Middle East blood money future of sports (where possible)...
I could go on.
But the official position is: To do just on the referee fuckery is not going to give sufficient service. So, for the third major sporting event, it's a boycott -- to at least that extent.
Now, I am even MORE certain something is going to go down ancillary to the pitch or off it that will merit discussion in this blog. In fact, I'm not even 100% sure something doesn't happen on a political end which skewers the entire event -- and I'm not talking a war or a nuclear exchange. It's as I've said a couple times already: You actually expected this clash of sensibilities to work.... HOW AGAIN???
I'm not 100% sure that Muslim sensibilities (or the backlash from non-Muslim fans coming to Qatar) won't kill this event at some point.
But, after consultation with readers I trust, I cannot, in good conscience, cover the matches of their own merit.
