September 16, 2022 News and Notes

  • Roger Federer is retiring after the next major international men's team event later this year.
  • The Giants got their first Week 1 win last week since 2016.
  • The Browns, since 2004!!
  • Yesterday was Roberto Clemente Day in MLB.  The Rays, today, trotted out an all-Latin-American starting lineup, a first in the history of the majors.
  • The minority owner of the Suns wants the majority owner out after his suspension.
  • At least one team sponsor is leaving the team if the majority owner isn't put out...
  • ... and the NBPA doesn't think it went far enough and wants the majority owner Sterlinged -- banned completely.
  • In a surprising decision, probably largely on procedural grounds (as the Jewish university jumped the gun several times to try to capitalize on the American Taliban in the Supreme Court), the US Supreme Court, earlier this week, published a 5-4 decision forcing Yeshiva University to recognize an LGBT student club.
  • Instead, they apparently are choosing today, the other option...  Yeshiva University has terminated activities for ALL school clubs until it can figure out what to do next.  (Much like, as one lawyer for the club points out, Jackson, Mississippi, where, 50 years ago, rather than desegregate their swimming pools, they just closed them all.)
  • Economic realities have finally claimed the record Broadway show -- the longest-running Broadway show in history, "Phantom of the Opera", closes in late February, 2023 after just over 35 years and over 12,000 performances.
  • Incoming problems for the Nationals, it appears.  They may be in need of an immediate new ballpark, because the District of Columbia is threatening to shut down Nationals Park because the people who made it also promised to develop the area around it into a hub for commerce and the like.  They want out of that agreement, citing the pandemic, etc.
  • Two away for Pujols now.  He gets #698 tonight, and still has almost three weeks to get two more.
