If this is any indication, there is going to be a lot of GOD-AWFUL football being played this year.
- 42.06 points per game this week (nearly a full touchdown lower than the 48 a game last year's Week 1 got).
- Three games didn't reach 30 total, a fourth hit 30 exactly.
- As a result, the Over was 5-11 this week (7-9 last year).
- Home teams were 6-9-1 this week (7-8 last year, 8-8 two years ago!).
- Favorites were 8-8 against the spread this week (4-12 last year). That's all Vegas needs. Remember, on an "evens" game, you're giving -110, so you need 9-7 to make money.
- Straight up? 10-5-1 (7-9 last year)
- 204 penalties this week (12.75 per game). (Last year: 214, 13.4 per game)
- Team with more penalties actually went 8-6-1 this week (10-5 last year!).
- I'll get to the big news of the score report in a second -- but 9 of the 16 games ended within one score. (Last year's week one had 9 as well.)
- 5 non-competitive games (last year had 7). (At no point did those games get 8 points or within in the last period.)
- 6 games ended with Last Chance Misses (last year: also 6). (A feasible chance failed at a tying or winning score in the final 2 minutes or overtime.)
- But the big news from the score report this week: Before we even got to the end of the first session, five Cliffhangers. The narrative slowed down for the rest of the weekend, and we ended up with six. (Last year's Week 1 had 3.)
- The highlight was Cincinnati-Pittsburgh, which was a five-bagger: Cincinnati scored what should've been the game-winning touchdown with seconds left, but the extra point was blocked to send it into overtime. The teams traded missed field goals for Last Chance Misses before Pittsburgh banged through the winner at the overtime gun for Double Cliffhanger, Triple Last Chance Miss.
- Six is NOT the record, at least as long as I've compiled the stat. 2015 Week 4, for one example, had SEVEN. Week 5 had 6. Week 8 had 6. 2015 Week 13 had seven. 2018 Week 4 had seven.
