September 25, 2022 News and Notes

  • Oklahoma was the main victim yesterday in college football, eliminated from the CFP consideration with a loss at home to Kansas State.
  • Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, and Clemson all won -- varying degrees of difficulty.
  • Eliud Kipchoge has the official marathon record down within sixty-nine seconds of the two hour mark.  He ran 2:01:09 in the Berlin Marathon to sever a half-minute from his world record today.  The two-hour stunt he did earlier was not official -- it involved pacing groups, too flat of a course, etc.  It was to prove it was possible.
  • Dodgers Magic Number down to 5 for best record in baseball, one over the Mets for best record in the NL.  Asterisks got their 100th win last night, their magic number for the AL is 5.
  • The September sumo tournament is over.
  • Carnage at the top:  Terunofuji, the sole Yokozuna, was off form and injured and eventually dropped out.  Ozeki Mitakeumi went 4-11 as kadoban, and is provisionally demoted to Sekiwake.  He must go 10-5 in November or he permanently drops.  Ozeki Shodai is kadoban for the fifth time in two years with a 4-11.
  • On the flip side:  Wakatakakage went 11-4 as a Sekiwake, beginning a new set where if he can duplicate that in November and January, he should be promoted to Ozeki.
  • The winner?  Maegashira Rank 3 Tamawashi, two wins clear of the field at 13-2.  It is his second championship -- and, as a Maegashira, he gets the Outstanding Performance Award as a bonus.  His other win was in January of 2019.
  • The Green Bay Police Department has officially apologized to Packer A.J. Dillon for actions during a Lambeau Field international soccer friendly this summer.
