Day 626

  • Couple of interesting facts:
  • This is the third year in a row that the Lions, Cowboys, and whoever hosted the third night game on Thanksgiving all lost.
  • And with New Orleans losing tonight to Buffalo, no team will be eliminated from playoff contention until at least the first Sunday in December.  I'm looking right at you, Kitties.
  • Bad blood from the second game spilled over afterward:  Trysten Hill of the Cowboys belted John Simpson of the Raiders after the match.
  • Bryan Adams is positive for COVID a second time.
  • And Steve Burton has been fired from the ABC soap General Hospital for refusing to vaccinate.
  • And there's now a new, reported MUCH more virulent strain, called the Mu strain, coming out of South Africa.  Just.  Fucking.  Great.
  • There is now a report, on this Black Friday 2021, that over 11% of Americans have already cancelled Christmas and will not be getting gifts for anybody!
  • The fifth version of "The Match" was held today, between the feuding The Sham Beau and Brooks Koepka, over 12 holes at the Wynn Casino and Resort in Las Vegas.  Koepka won 4 and 3.
  • Dick Vitale was back on the mic of an ESPN Events tournament in Orlando today -- he witnessed Dayton buzzer-beating #4 Kansas in the game.  (I erred earlier, thinking he was at the Gonzaga-Duke game as well.)
  • Landmark composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim has passed away today at 91.
  • LeBron, you're about to be suspended AGAIN.  $15,000 fine for an on-court obscene gesture first game back from the suspension.  NBA officially warned LeBron of that and additional obscenities during the post-game press scrum.
  • History continues to mount for current Jeopardy! champion Amy Schneider of Oakland, who is now one of the top ten winners in regular-season play in show history.  Her 8 wins have netted her $295,200 -- an average win of $36,900.  Andy Saunders' current projections have her an ultra-champion, and quite possibly the first woman in the history of the show to win $500,000 in regular play.
  • As largely feared because of results, we now know that World Cup 2022 in Qatar will not have both Italy and Portugal in it, as they have been drawn in the same pod of four.
The European pods for the playoff were drawn today:
  1. Turkey at Portugal, North Macedonia at Italy
  2. Austria at Wales, Ukraine at Scotland
  3. Poland at Russia, Czech Republic at Sweden
All matches in the playoff are single-legged.  The Wales-Austria winner, the Russia-Poland winner, and the Portugal-Turkey winner will host the pod finals for the three final European World Cup spots.  Both matches will be played in the same World Cup window:  The pod semifinals on March 24th, the pod finals on March 29th.
  • The interconfederational playoffs were also drawn today:  CONCACAF #4 vs. Oceania.(who is finally slated to announce what it's going to do to TRY to get a qualification in -- if the new Mu strain doesn't nail everything!), and CONMEBOL #5 vs. the Asian interconfederational, which is the winner of a playoff between the third-placed sides in each of two final Asian groups.
