Leave it to the armpit of California to do it again as far as the complete idiocy of sports.
Arroyo Valley High School of San Bernadino "played" Bloomington High of the nearby Colton School District on January 5, 2015.
According to Max Preps, the CBS Sports High School Sports site:
Here are some of the scores of other games (before and since) that Bloomington High has played:
48-8 loss at Fontana
49-8 loss at Colton High
53-10 loss at Rubidoux
56-9 loss
51-13 loss
in fact, those last two games were in the two consecutive days after the game I'm mentioning.
The team is averaging about 10 points a game, and, needless to say, has lost their first 15 contests.
Arroyo Valley, on the other hand...
16-1. Average points scored per game: 82.8
Average points against: 27.05.
Average margin of victory, almost +56.
Here are some of their recent scores:
78-28
80-19 (keep these two in mind for a second for a reason I'll get to)
60-29 (in a game that was 57-17 at the end of three quarters)
89-38
110-12 at a holiday tournament (keep this one in mind too)
(Their one loss was to Bloomington _Christian_ High School in an early-season tournament.)
There's a reason I went through all this.
Because the "game" between the two teams went about as you'd expect:
Arroyo Valley scored over 100 points in the first HALF. It was 104-0 at the end of the half.
The final score was 161-2.
For this, and the national embarrassment it caused, the school finally banned the coach, Michael Anderson, for two games, which Arroyo Valley promptly went and won by a total of 158-47.
It's time for either Arroyo Valley to shut down it's program or for it to be basically demanded (and this happens far more often in girls' basketball than in most other sports) that rules be put in place (not unlike football in many states, where measures are taken once scores get out of hand) to make the games more the educational experiences they should be rather than the utter sacrifices farces like this turn into.
You want to know how bad this got?
The only game recorded in the history of California which was worse, both in score and in margin, in girls' high school basketball, was when Cheryl Miller dumped 105 on a poor team and her school, Riverside Poly, defeated Riverside Norte Vista 179-15!
Arroyo Valley played full-court press (as the other coach was told he was going to do) for at least the first half. They changed to a half-court trap in the third quarter.
One of his responses was to honestly say "I didn't expect them to be that bad."
They FINALLY started some measures to stop the bleeding in the fourth quarter by going running-clock. They wanted to do it in the third quarter, but the officials declined until the score at the end of three quarters was 152-2. If the officials didn't finally relent, they were going to put TWO HUNDRED on this team!
ARE YOU EVEN LOOKING AT THE TEAMS YOU ARE PLAYING?
I mean, I've believed for years that there is no educational worth in someone getting slaughtered like this. If this means that non-competitive schools are either winnowed out or segregated, then, to me, better that than THIS!!
It's not just the coach. They won the two games he was banned for by an average of over 50 points!
If there's one silver lining, it's maybe that someone's going to take a look at this and basically start realizing that there are just certain games that just cannot be allowed to take place.
