2023 NFL Week Two Fine Blotter

First off, those who go reclick the Week One Fine Blotter will find some updating on specifics.  Due to the fact that the NFL and NFLPA have an agreement on "Gameday Accountability", I am able to check not only more specifically what the fine was for, but whether it was flagged.

The referees did not do a good job in Week One:  Of the 32 fined offenses, 15 were not flagged.

The 29 players were on 15 different teams, and fines for Week One totaled $301,202.

So, it's Saturday afternoon, let's see what the NFL chooses to report THIS WEEK:

Thirty-five fines this week.

Baltimore Ravens:  Rashod Bateman, $16,391 for a blindside block.
Baltimore Ravens:  Patrick Queen, $21,498 for unnecessary roughness on a Cincinnati touchdown, unflagged.  If I had to guess at this point, another leading with the helmet situation.

Buffalo Bills:  Taylor Rapp, $9,611 for unnecessary roughness.

Cleveland Browns:  FIVE this week
Cleveland Browns:  DeShaun Watson got three.  He got $10,927 for each of his face masks.  He got $13,659 for a separate incident, not the shoving of the official, for which he was not sanctioned.  $38,245 total.
Cleveland Browns:  David Njoku also got $13,659 on the play Watson also got fined for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Cleveland Browns:  Jerome Ford:  $5,281 for involvement in an altercation after the TJ Watt scoop and score.

Denver Broncos:  Nick Bonito:  $7,326 for a face mask.
Denver Broncos:  Kareem Jackson, for his second defenseless receiver foul, gets $19,969 for the first ejection of the season.

Houston Texans:  Denzel Perryman got the largest fine of the year so far:  $66,666.  It was for a single offense (otherwise, like Watson, they'd have been listed separately.)  The hit was NOT flagged.  The fine was for lowering the helmet to initiate contact on the ball-carrier, with a repeat-offender aggravation.  That's one you need a TMO to buzz them for 15 on that.  That's BLATANT AND EJECTABLE.

Kansas City:  Travis Kelce:  $13,659 for unsportsmanlike conduct.  (Where's the repeat offender on this one?)  Flagged and fined for removal of the helmet in protest.

Las Vegas Raiders:  Trevon Moehrig, $11,962 for helmet to helmet on the quarterback.

Los Angeles Chargers:  Derwin James
Los Angeles Chargers:  Kenneth Murray, both $21,855, both for roughing the passer.

Los Angeles Rams:  Russ Yeast, $4,940 for involvement in an altercation.

Minnesota Vikings:  Troy Dye, $6,554 for probably an illegal hit to cause a punt fumble that went unflagged.

New England Patriots:  Marte Mapu, $5,620 for a defenseless receiver hit which put a Miami receiver out for a couple plays.

New Orleans Saints:  Foster Moreay, $10,000, unnecessary roughness, will try to find more details.
New Orleans Saints:  Adam Prentice, $5,222 for a post-play altercation.

Pittsburgh Steelers also led the league with FIVE fines, totalling over $150,000.  Meaning that there were ten fines in that Monday night game.
Pittsburgh Steelers:  Kwon Alexander and
Pittsburgh Steelers:  Elandon Roberts, both $43,709.  Both for lowering the helmet to initiate contact, neither flagged, both should've been tossed.
Pittsburgh Steelers:  Jaylen Warren, $48,556, same foul, same two caveats.  (That's FOUR EJECTIONS that crew missed Monday night!)
Pittsburgh Steelers:  DeMarvin Leal, $6,549, uncalled face mask.
Pittsburgh Steelers:  DaMontae Kazee, $11,806, unnecessary roughness (altercation after play with aggravator?).

San Francisco 49ers:  Jauan Jennings, $21,855 for a crackback block.

Seattle Seahawks:  Tre Brown, $6,112 for a face mask.
Seattle Seahawks:  DK Metcalf (AGAIN -- that's three for him this season), $10,927, also for a face mask.
Seattle Seahawks:  Darrell Taylor, $11,957 for roughing the passer.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers:  Vita Vea, $8,941, unnecessary roughness
Tampa Bay Buccaneers:  Rachaad White, $6,477, altercation out of bounds?

Washington Commanders:  Jamin Davis, $21,855 and
Washington Commanders:  Chase Young, $16,391, both for roughing the passer.

Another (intentional) shit week for the refs.  Only 18 of the 35 fouls which gained fines this week were actually flagged.

They seem to have a real problem with the "lowering helmet rule", as at least four players should've seen the gate this week for that alone, not to mention Watson for shoving the ref in that ten-fine-fest on Monday Night.

Only three teams fined in Week 1 were not in Week 2.

The total charity donation was $597,103, total $898,305.

24 teams are now on the official blotter.  Ten clean sheets remain.

And, with only one league ejection this year, the count of ejection fouls not called (NOT counting Thursday night!) is up to eight, with five last week.  Six are helmet fouls.
