Labor Day 2023 News and Notes

  • Steve Harwell, lead singer of "Smash Mouth", died of liver failure today.  He was 56.
  • Dodgers pitcher Julio Urias was arrested last night for battery on his spouse.  Out on $50,000 bail, investigations ongoing.
    • It would be his second.  Urias was suspended 20 games in 2019.
      • He would be the first player disciplined under the policy twice, so I'd have to think he probably faces a similar penalty to Trevor Bauer.  There is no set punishment in the MLB policy.
    • Should be on the Commissioner's List by tomorrow.  The Dodgers do not play tonight.
    • The team has already placed him on Administrative Leave.
    • And there's a good chance this is on video.  It apparently took place at a soccer match, according to reports, with a hat-tip to my anonymous baseball-historian (and pissed-off Dodger fan) friend.
    • And an eyewitness account posted to Reddit:

      • Apparently took place at last night's LA Football Club soccer match.
  • Another Georgia staffer is arrested on reckless driving.
    • I guess I'll put it here because I believe most of college football to be so irrelevant that the sport doesn't merit a full preview.  Prediction for the CFP title:  Alabama, as Michigan and Georgia (the two teams they are trying to tell you are the two best) get screwed by ESPN and the refs to prevent them from making the championship match.  Final game:  Alabama/Ohio State, you can figure out how bad Bama is going to, as Usenet puts it, RSFCk Ohio State.
