Week 5 Score Update: More cliffs, more unbeatens...

  • The NFL has confirmed on their Twitter something I was wondering:  Until this year, there had never been a season in which six teams remained undefeated through five weeks.
  • Week 5 average:  46.29 PPG (Last year:  47.07)
  • 5 week average:  46.26 (Last year:  46.37)
  • Home teams 7-7 on the week, 42-34 overall.  (Last year:  11-4 and 49-26)
  • Over was 7-7 as well on the week, 37-36-4 to 37-39-1 for the year -- any way you slice it, if you're betting the over, you're about 4 units down.  (Last year:  7-8 and 39-37 or so.)
  • One game was either a pick or a push (Buffalo's 1 point win) and two more games pushed outright (Denver, and Cincinnati).  So favorites were only 5-6-3 to make 33-37-7 for the year.
  • 203 penalties in the 14 games, 14.5 a game.
  • In, once again, the big story of the week:  SIX CLIFFHANGERS, making 13 out of the last 29 NFL games, including the Sunday nighter, Monday nighter, and Cincinnati over Seattle.  (The other three were Cleveland, Atlanta, and Chicago, the former two and Cincinnati in overtime.)
  • Four other games were within one score without being a Cliffhanger, and there were no other games within a score at any point in the fourth quarter (four non-competitive games, though St. Louis had two fourth-quarter turnovers inside the Green Bay 10 to make their game within one score.)
  • Cliffhanger:  19/77 for the year (24.68%)  Last year: 13/76 (17.11%)
  • Decided By One Score:   42/77 (54.55%)  Last year:  40.79%
  • Within One Score In the 4th:  52/77 (67.53%)  Last year:  63.1%
