(Being that the World Cup is in Russia that year, I cannot completely blame them!)
This is not how to go about it, though.
Four months ago, Clint Dempsey (who was captain of the US Men's National Team) was banned for two years from the US Open Cup and suspended for three MLS matches (but no CONCACAF penalty, Gold Cup or World Cup Qualifier!) for his attack on referee Daniel Radford.
Going to be interesting to see how CONCACAF and the MLS handle this latest incident, according to Deadspin!
Jermaine Jones, 54 appearances for the United States and a member of the 2014 World Cup team, has attacked an MLS referee after being sent off of a knockout-stage playoff match for the New England Revolution.
In stoppage time, down 2-1 to DC United, Mark Geiger, the senior United States soccer referee, sent off Jones after Jones shoved Geiger to protest a missed handball call in the penalty box.
This is, in fact, the second time this year Jones has accosted Mark Geiger. Back in May, Jones assaulted Geiger late in a 1-1 draw with DC United. He appeared to bump Geiger and definitely charged him, with New England already two men in arrears for previous red cards!
Geiger chose not to sanction Jones for the assault.
Jones is racking up a significant disciplinary history:
- An eight-week ban while with German club Schalke for stamping a player.
- May 2015: Fined by the MLS for placing hands on the face or neck area of another player in an altercation. (Sent off for Violent Conduct???)
- May 2015: First incident with Geiger.
- October 28, 2015: Second incident with Geiger.
NOW!!
