I think it's clear that the NFL is sitting on a ticking timebomb.
I can easily see why the NFL is not releasing those e-mails -- there could be enough racism, homophobia, etc. to stop play.
Seriously.
Today, word came out that ESPN's Adam Schefter has been exposed, at minimum for giving Bruce Allen, then with Washington, access to an unpublished story he was about to publish, giving Allen the opportunity to tweak it to make him and them look better.
It is not known as to this being the nature of the story (Schefter says it had to do with the impending NFL lockout), but there is now also word, on a separate report, Allen and Jon Gruden exchanged several crude e-mails, including topless photos of a number of the Washington cheerleaders.
(Gruden was also with ESPN at the time -- gee, is the Worldwide Leader in Snorts going to reveal this one???)
It appears, as of now, ESPN will not take action against Schefter, one of it's most well-known NFL Insiders.
-------------
The fact is, I do now believe that if the entire 650,000 e-mail trove the NFL has ever truly becomes public, the NFL is in existential trouble.
There is no secret, from the treatment of Black players, to the latent homophobia, to the cheerleaders and God knows what else, the NFL is probably one of the bastions of the Good Ol' Boys' Club of powerful male insiders who basically have the right to rape, pillage, and plunder whatever they want.
Maybe THIS is why Dan Snyder has not yet been banned by the NFL -- for, if the true punishment needed were ever administered, the league would not be able to continue, on an organizational level.
You now have very real and valid concern by the NFLPA head DeMaurice Smith that the racism in the league has extended into widespread and RAMPANT Rooney Rule violations, ensuring the very few Black people in any form of leadership (and, by extension, you can lead that to the quarterbacks as well!) which exist in the NFL.
The owners of the Raiders believe the NFL "has the answers", but imagine if racism/homophobia/sexism is as prevalent in the NFL (and as necessary for the upkeep of the league!) as we find out sexism and sexual harassment, etc. are necessary to have the NWSL!!!
David Carr, it's good you want all the correspondence opened up. Be careful what you wish for.
I fear if you're right, the games STOP.
