Day 577

Football thoughts:

  • Gee, Gruden, you think you're gonna get any calls at all when you badmouth the commish?  Not just the racist against the NFLPA head, but you badmouth the commish...  The Bears Still Suck, Your Mouth Sucks Worse.  Chicago 20 - Las Vegas 9.
  • So who gets fired first?  Meyer or Gruden??
  • Or does the NFL suspend Gruden on Monday?  Word is that Supplemental Discipline HAS been triggered...  If I had to guess, more for the comments against Goodell than the ones against Smith.
  • I think we have one of the main scoring-control and rigging situations down this year -- selective enforcement of both pass interference and defensive holding.  It was all over the map today, including two bad no-calls in the end zones which helped rig wins for both Dallas (4-1 now) and the LA Chargers (also 4-1!).  HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM...
  • An NFL first:  FIVE missed field goals in a game in the last 2:12 and overtime.  With the score tied at 22...
  1. Mason Crosby missed a 36 yard field goal with 2:12 left for the Packers.
  2. Evan McPherson missed for Cincinnati from 57 with 21 seconds left.
  3. Crosby tried to win it at the gun, missed from 51.
  4. Then a turnover, so Crosby could win it...  Nope from 40.
  5. McPherson to win it, and he THOUGHT HE DID.  They had to tell him HE MISSED with 4:19 to go from 49.
  6. Crosby FINALLY wins it at the first play after the two-minute overtime warning from 49.  Cliffhanger, Last Chance Miss X FOUR and 12 seconds from FIVE!
  • With the shock loss by Alabama to Texas A&M, Georgia is now the clear undisputed #1.  Cincinnati is now seen in the Playoff -- that will not last...
  • An oddity you look at when you start looking at games possibly being manipulated.  In the 55+ years of the Super Bowl era -- no team, in over 400 games, who scored 40 points without committing a turnover lost...
  • ... until today when the Chargers beat the Browns 47-42.
  • The NFL has announced the record is now up to 18 games in which the winning score has come last minute or overtime -- the most in the first five weeks in history.  18 out of the first 78 (soon to be 79 at this rate) games.  (Two more have been between 1 and 2 minutes left.)
