Day 493

  • All hail the King!  Hakuho defeats Terunofuji for his 45th tournament victory, his 16th undefeated tournament victory, and his 15th undefeated tournament victory as a Yokozuna.  All are records by miles.
  • Speaking of Yokozuna, the Yokozuna Deliberation Committee HAS announced they have a candidate in Terunofuji.  They'll meet today or tomorrow, with the formal decision coming within a couple days from the Japan Sumo Association.
  • He won two consecutive tournaments in Hakuho's absence (the first at the lower rank, however -- or he'd have been made Yokozuna before this tournament), he then goes 14-1 to Hakuho after.  So he has met equivalency requirements.  The only argument I can see made now is NOT the foul from the May tournament, but that Hakuho's greatness is so vast, no one is worthy to even stand with him anymore at Yokozuna.
  • The game, suspended by the shooting outside the stadium last night (now word that three were injured in the shooting), between the Padres and Nationals, will resume at 1 PM Eastern today -- then the nine-inning game scheduled for today will follow it.
  • No word on whether he's been charged with anything, but the fan who threw the baseball at Alex Verdugo at Yankee Stadium this weekend will never be allowed at another Major League Baseball game again -- Life Ban.
  • Mr. Tatis, you don't have to explain to anyone why you opened another escape route by allowing fans into the dugout, etc., Saturday night.  Good on you guys.
