The COVIDLympics, Day -21: Two Americans DQ'd for drugs.

  • Sha'Carri Richardson is out of the 100 meters in Tokyo.  She has been disqualified from the US Olympic Trials, her victory in the 100 nullified for a positive marijuana test.  She took the drug as a psychological coping mechanism after the death of her mother.  She CAN, however, still be named by USATF to the 4X100 meter relay team with one of two wildcard spots.
  • The reason this is possible is that the suspension for the offense carries through the 100m direct competition, but the relays are held at the end of the meet and are, hence, are another matter.
  • A second American fully lost her chance to probably ever compete again.  Brianna McNeal, who also ran in the Trials, but under appeal, must serve a five-year ban for tampering the testing process and being a repeat offender, the CAS ruled today.  McNeal was the defending champion at the 100 hurdles from Rio.  Incredibly, even though she was banned for the 2017 season for missing drug tests, her 2016 Rio gold medal has, as of yet, not been stripped.  McNeal would have to compete when she is 36, in Los Angeles in 2028, if she ever wants to try the Olympics again.
  • Anyone else get the impression China may actually, between this type of stuff and the protests (though, today, the IOC has relaxed SOME provisions of the protesting rules), top the medal table in Tokyo?
  • The count is now up to five African runners removed from the Olympics under Differences in Sexual Development rules, including (if their times are to be believed) two of the medal favorites at 400m.  No one has really ever heard of the two Namibians, but one just ran the U20 World Record (which will be nullified, due to these policies) on Wednesday in Poland, and the fastest time of the year.  The second ran the third-fastest women's 400m of the year.  Both are slated to run the 200m, which is NOT under these policies.
