The COVIDLympics, Day -16: State of Emergency

  • It now appears that Japan is going to concede the point, at least insofar that the 2021 Olympics, if they take place at all, will have to take place under State of Emergency conditions.  Tokyo is back under State of Emergency as we speak -- and this one goes through the Games, meaning no fans at the Olympics.
  • 12 staffers at the Olympic Village, including two who would work in the village, have tested positive for the coronavirus -- according to Julia Mio Inuma of the Washington Post.  According to an Indian report, the two in the village broke protocols by eating in a group with two other workers, who almost-certainly are now under contact-tracing.
  • Two athletes, a Ugandan and a Serb, as well as a Ugandan coach have also tested positive upon arrival to Japan.
  • One report now has that Sha'Carri Richardson may have just cost herself $10,000,000 in endorsements with her Trials disqualification.
  • The two Namibian women who are disqualified for excessive testoserone/DSD from the 400m (both of whom have run in the top three times this year in the event) are vowing to fight the rulings going forward.
  • A female Kenyan runner has posited on the subject, all else failing, that a third classification of events is going to have to be created, per an interview with the BBC.  Reminding the bigots that all three of the 800m women's medalists in Rio were DSD, to the point where all three have been disqualified from competing in the event in Tokyo.
