Day 487

  • Sports news might be a shade on the slow side, with three full days of the All-Star Break starting and a fourth day on Thursday with just one ESPN game on it.
  • A non-scientific MSN News poll below the article to which I referred in the QAnon conspiracy to reinstall Donald Trump, scarily has about one respondent in six believing this scenario is actually likely to succeed in the "reinstall in days, not years" motif.  80%, sanely, believe it won't succeed at all.
  • 9-0 for Terunofuji and Hakuho as the collision course continues in the July sumo tournament.  Though both will, now, face, higher-ranked opposition in the second week, much of the remainder of the higher ranks is either out or performing poorly.
  • Novak Djokovic has tied the all-time record.  His win at Wimbledon, in four sets over Italian Matteo Berrettini, is his 20th Grand Slam championship.  He lost only two sets the entire tournament, including a tiebreaker first set to Berrettini -- and now, the US Open will not only be for the record, it will be for a NATURAL GRAND SLAM.  He has won the first three legs.  He is only denied a (second, see below) Novak Slam by his disqualification for injuring a line judge in anger at last year's US Open.
  • He would become only the third player to win the Natural Grand Slam for the men.  Don Budge in 1938, and Rod Laver twice -- in 1962 and 1969.
  • Three women have also done it in singles:  Maureen Connolly in 1953 (and she had two more consecutive titles for a total of six), Margaret Court in 1970 (ditto), and Steffi Graf in 1988 (one more for five consecutive titles.
  • Non-natural (non-calendar year) Slams have happened four times for the women (Navratilova (1983-84), Serena Williams twice (2002-03 and 2014-15), and Steffi Graf (1993-94)).
  • Navratilova and Williams both also have a Women's Doubles non-natural Slam.
  • Djokovic already has a non-natural Slam, winning the 2015 Wimbledon and US Open, and the 2016 Australian and French Opens.  He is the only singles man to complete the feat.
  • The last seven Natural tennis Grand Slams have taken place in the Wheelchair Doubles event.  Four of the pairs were Dutch.
  • Zach Johnson has joined Hideki Matsuyama -- out of the British Open, COVID.
  • If there is a meaningful betting market for the Home Run Derby and the All-Star Game MVP, Shohei Ohtani is the runaway favorite in both.
