The COVIDLympics, Day -18: No, the song is STILL not what you think it is...

  • Jessica Springsteen is headed to Tokyo as a part of the US Equestrian team.
  • Yes, her dad is Bruce.
  • A late January projection from Top End Sports had the US projected at 109 medals and China at 91.  With at least two probable medals off the table (see earlier posts), the margin for error the US has is still sizable, but shrinking.
  • Another website which specializes in such predictions has it (as of today) 106-92 in total, 49-42 in gold.
  • Great Britain and Japan and slated to compete for the third-highest nation total.  (Disqualified Russia, more correctly the ROC team, is slated for 27 golds and 70 medals.)
  • That disqualified national committee has approved over 300 athletes to compete neutrally.
  • One of them will not be 2018 World Indoor high jump champion (and 2017 world silver-medalist) Danil Lysenko.  Banned six years of which he's already apparently served three, upheld by the CAS today.  Doping and evasion of drug tests, including the falsification of documents.  (His next Olympics would be Los Angeles -- the ban extends through Paris.)
  • There will, in fact, be an Olympic Refugee Team again this year, competing under the EOR banner for the French translation of Olympic Refugee Team.
  1. 29 athletes.
  2. 9 from Syria
  3. 12 different disciplines, including a mixed Judo team.
  • Latest report has that there will be no fans at the 2021 Olympic Opening Ceremony -- a limited number of VIPs and Olympic officials will be allowed to attend.
