Day 193 (mostly Week 2 NFL)

  • Well, a new Steroid Era has almost-certainly begun in professional golf in this country.  Bryson DeChambeau made mincemeat of not only the course (lowest 72-hole Winged Foot score and only the third person to complete a US Open at Winged Foot under par, and beat the USGA's target score by FOURTEEN SHOTS) but the field (only person this year under par, won the tournament by six) with a rhetoric-creating first major win at the 2020 US Golf Open.  Fuck.  God help us all...

NFL Week 2:

  • Well, it's clear that Goodell is going to try to get people back through scoring, scoring, and more scoring.  795 points so far in Week 2 (a 53 point per game average).
  • Week 14 of 2013 had 859 points, the current NFL record for a 16-game week.
  • Las Vegas vs. New Orleans at the opener of Allegiant Stadium tomorrow night -- and, if at least 65 points are scored in that game, there will be a new record for most points in an NFL week.  Current Vegas total is 48.5.
  • Another interesting stat:  There have been 14 of the first 31 games of the season finishing 8 point margin or within.  That's quite a low number.  But even more interesting is that all fourteen of those games have had either a Cliffhanger or a Last Chance Miss, or BOTH.  Meaning that, in every one of those games, the result has come down to the final two minutes of the game, one way or the other.
  • Six national games so far this season in prime time.  Only the KC-HOU opener was non-competitive.  PIT-NYG (MNF game 1) was within 8 at some point in the 4th quarter.  All four other games have had a Last Chance Miss (a good chance to win or tie the game in the last 2 minutes, missed), one of the four also had a Cliffhanger too.
  • Favorites are 14-1 straight up this week.
  • When Buffalo beat Miami 31-28, it became the first road team in six games to win at a game in 2020 where some fans were present.  Home teams in those games are still 5-1.
