2020 NFL Week Three Score Report

  • The NFL fell 20 points, this week, short of breaking the 16-game record for points in a week, but it's absolutely clear that Goodell is using scoring and dramatic games to try to bring fans to the TV sets...
  • 835 points this week, 52.19 per game.
  • For the three weeks, 48 games:  2446 points, an average of 50.96 per game.  The average NFL game, right now, if you took it as a close game, would be 27-24.
  • Home teams are 6-9-1 for the week, 25-22-1 for the year.
  • Vegas is adjusting:  The Over was only 9-7 for 29-19 for the year.  The lowest Vegas total for the week was 43 for Tampa Bay vs. Denver (under, Tampa won 28-10).  There were five over 50, including all three national prime-time games (TNF was 50 and went under:  28-13 MIA over JAX, SNF was 52 and went over:  GB 37-30 over NO.  And the big one MNF was KC over BAL 34-20, one point under the 55.)
  • Highest Vegas total of the Week was 57, and Seattle and Dallas went over when Seattle won 37-30.
  • The other 50+ total was Detroit and Arizona at 56, under at 26-23 Detroit.
  • 8-8 against the number for favorites this week, 9-6-1 straight up.  23-24 ATS for the year.  32-14-1 straight up.
  • Team with more penalties was 6-7-1 for the week, 19-23-1 for the year.
  • 187 penalties for the week (11.7 a game), 567 for the year (11.8).
  • SIX Cliffhangers for the week, more than half the season total of 11.
  • 10 of the 16 games finished within a score, meaning now half (24) of the games this season have so finished.
  • 5 non-competitive games for 15 for the season.
  • 4 Last Chance Misses this week for 16 total.
  • For the first time this season, we had a game (two, in fact) where the game finished within one score but neither a Cliffhanger nor a Last Chance Miss was satisfied to get there.

Now, lemme see if I can find any early ratings news -- been a bit harder to find...

  • NFL Network lost 13% from last year's number for Week 3 for Thursday night.
  • About 15 million, according to Show Buzz Daily, for Packers-Saints last night.  Early numbers indicate that's about -11% over last year.
  • THE BOYCOTT IS IN FULL EFFECT.  The only network getting increases is FOX, and that's probably ALL Tom Brady and the Cowboys.
