Day 179

  • Lou Brock passed away at 81 today.
  • Novak Djokovic has been thrown out of the US Open for violence against a line judge.  One of the few immediate disqualification (they call it default in tennis) events is hitting any official in anger.  Djokovic hit the line judge with a ball in anger in his fourth-round match and was tossed.
  • Djokovic, in addition to any supplemental discipline (he faces a possible one-year suspension from the tour -- though there is little chance it'll go that far), loses all money and ranking points for the tournament.  He was the men's #1 seed.
  • Nick Kyrgios has already piped up as to how long would he be suspended for if he did the same.  Patience...  That's not a situation which can be immediately applied.  That has to go through the ATP Tribunal and probably an appeal by Djokovic.  I do think he should be banned, minimum the rest of 2020.
  • At least two western locations in Southern California -- Chino and Woodland Hills in LA County, hit 121 degrees today.  That is the highest temperature ever recorded on any day west of the mountains in that part of the state.
  • At least two unofficial locations in LA County hit 122!
  • According to the National Weather Service in San Diego, Escondido (115) and Idyllwild (104) also broke all-time all-day records.
  • According to the NWS in LA, three other locations beat and one tied their all-time all-day records:  Van Nuys (118), Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo (both 117 -- though their records only go back about 25 years) and Burbank tied theirs (115, but the tie was from Saturday!!!).
  • Downtown Los Angeles got to 111 today -- their record is 113 from 2010, with a 112 from 1990.
  • Death Valley broke it's all-time September temperature record at 125 on Saturday.  "Only" got to about 121-122 today.  Staring another possible 125 tomorrow.
