I do not know, even about 36 hours from the Opening Ceremonies, if I will not be asked, with due and correct cause, to cease reporting on the Beijing Games.
That said, there is one thing which has to go over the top here...
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD WE BE THERE, AND UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD THE GAMES OF THE XXIVth WINTER OLYMPIAD BE COMPETED AT PRESENT SCHEDULE.
It's bad enough, and correctly bad enough, to talk of all the Chinese human-rights abuses and that we should make our diplomatic boycotts actual boycotts. I will not argue a word with that basis alone.
But the facts are coming out: Only totalitarian regimes, or countries otherwise "free" who decide to invoke totalitarian methods to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, are having any success whatsoever containing the explosive spread of COVID-19.
As I will say in my next (non-sports) post, I believe that especially the United States has lost the fight, past-tense, to COVID-19.
Evidence is mounting with the opening days of comparative testing of the Olympic community that the foreign Olympic athletes, coaches, officials, and corporate "stake holders" are testing positive at a far higher percentage than the native Chinese population.
We should be ready, as a world, by now.
That we aren't is a testament to the falsehoods of freedom, as I will get to in the other post.
But whatever the cause, the world is not ready yet for events of this scale. I, now, have more than a small degree of skepticism regarding Paris 2024!
The fact these Games will be held is a testament to two very scary realities of the Olympic movement:
1) It's hanging on by a thread, and all you need for that is the funereal view of the 2021 Tokyo Games Opening Ceremony.
2) And a belief system which has predated COVID: With cities declining the financial destruction of previous Games dating back to Montreal, the Olympic Movement may (after France, Italy, and the United States) be heading a far more totalitarian direction (statements about what the USA will look like in 2028 aside!!!), if it survives COVID.
I mean, hold it in the winter of 2024, old school or something.
But it sounds like they're gonna go through with it and have no business doing so.
Well, unless I'm asked for good cause to boycott, you'll hear about it.
