The Winter Olympic Virus, Day 3

  • Nine medal events today, including another attempt at the men's downhill between the two runs of the women's giant slalom.
  • And, in a move which slightly increases the chances of the USA gold medal count being zero, Mikaela Shiffrin can't even make it once down the hill for the giant slalom.  A big USA medal hope DNFs.
  • Mike Tirico is being pulled from the in-China Olympic coverage and will head to the Super Bowl in LA a couple days sooner than he planned.  After the NBC coverage of the Super Farce, he will then go to NBC's Stamford, CT Olympic headquarters to continue the Beijing coverage there.   Perhaps the first high-profile budget saving move after the Opening ratings were a disaster?  The USA medal count not going to justify the effort?
  • After competing in the team free skate and helping the USA win silver, Vincent Zhou learned he was COVID positive.  He's out of the men's competition, which starts on Day 4.
  • Outside the Winter Games, Hungary will replace Japan so the World Swimming Championships can be held in 2022.  They hope.
Medal Count:
  • Only 3 silvers for the USA so far.  The USA now stands tied for FOURTEENTH with France with three silvers on the official table.
  • Sweden tops the table.  Though the illegal Russian team leads the total with seven, all three Swedish medals are gold, and they are the only nation with three.
  • Thirteen nations have struck gold.
  • Nineteen have medaled.
  • Ten sets of medals tomorrow.  And, a cursory look indicates it's going to take a lot to break the maiden.
