July 9, 2023 News and Notes

  • Unless one or more of the Sekiwake do well in this tournament, the Sumo Association may be back in the same problem in September it had in May.  Both Ozeki will now be kadoban for September, as new Ozeki Kirishima (the former Kiribiyama) announced withdrawal today before Day 1 due to back pain.
    • All three Sekiwake have realistic chances of promoting to Ozeki in this tournament.
      • Hoshoryu probably needs twelve wins.  But that would get him promotion, 33 in 3 at Sekiwake.
      • Daieisho is an interesting call.  He may need to win the tournament, or get at least 12-13 wins, as this is only his second Sekiwake tournament.
      • Wakamotoharu is about in the same boat -- there is some belief he or Daieisho must win the tournament, and 12-3 or better, to promote.
