July 16, 2023 News and Notes

  • And Asanoyama's run to return to Ozeki has been derailed, but this time, due to injury.  Partial tear in his arm/elbow ligaments.
  • What does Mike Dean know and when did he know it?  Dean was forced to retire from English football officiating after almost three decades (at least the last year being in VAR) after "showdown talks" with the appropriate body, and then being found "unfit for duty" for officiating.
  • Speaking of The (Less Than) Beautiful Game: Ireland is charging Colombia's soccer federation with attempting to eliminate their women's team, forcing abandonment of a women's "friendly" between the two teams where, after 22 minutes, one Irish player went to the hospital with a leg injury and there was real fear of more injurious conduct.  In short:  Welcome to the South American game, ladies.  Only loosely is it called "football".
  • The Speed Gamers are holding their annual (almost-)week-long event for St. Jude's Children's Hospitals.  As of 77 hours in, they've raised just over $9,000 -- and, after taking a year off, they have announced a return to their quarterly schedule as they try to use the last of their time together (this is their 15th anniversary marathon, so many of the originals are well into their 30's) to get to a million dollars raised lifetime.
