Day 549, Non-NFL Edition

I think America Day Three is going to get at least two separate posts today.  Here's some of the other stuff:

  • Well, it's official and the record has been shattered to pieces.  The ninth recognized and 11th actual no-hitter of the 2021 MLB season, as two Brewers combined to no-hit the Indians 3-0.  Josh Hader and Corbin Burnes did the honors -- which now makes this the all-time record, not just the modern era.
  • Emma Raducanu, three months a professional at 18 years old, was playing in the US Open Qualifier tournament two weeks ago.  For the first time in the Open era, a qualifier (she) has won a Grand Slam tennis tournament, Raducanu beating fellow unseeded teenager Leylah Fernandez 6-3, 6-4.  Moreover, she became the first woman since Serena Williams seven years ago to win all seven matches in the main draw without dropping a set!
  • Florida State took a major hit to it's program on Saturday, losing to the Ohio Valley Conference's Jacksonville State (an FCS school).
  • USC will need a new kicker for at least the first half of next week's game.  Parker Lewis was ejected for targeting on the opening kickoff against Stanford.  USC lost 42-28.
  • 16 basketball superstars were inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame yesterday -- three days after the 2020 Baseball Hall of Fame class was inducted (remember:  There was no 2021 Baseball class -- no one got put in.)
  • The Triller Fight Club scam continues:  Viktor Belfort annihilated 58 year-old Evander Holyfield by first-round knockout.  Donald Trump called him a true patriot on the alternate commentary.  Gee, would the color of Holyfield's skin have anything to do with that, you orange fuck?
  • And we have our apparent SECOND targeting no-call rig-job -- this was also in the Ohio State game, but this was against the Buckeyes:  Down a touchdown in the fourth quarter, this happens.  Clear targeting/spearing -- the same call which was made to eject a player when he speared Clemson's Trevor Lawrence in the ribs in a CFP National Semifinal.

  • Max Scherzer not only got his 3,000th strikeout today -- he also got three of them in an immaculate inning (9 pitches, 3 K's) against the fading Padres.   And he took a perfect game into the 8th in an 8-0 Dodgers win.  But the Giants keep winning (doesn't hurt the Cubs have absolutely given up!), so they're still 2 up in the NL West.
  • Novak Djokovic's dream of a calendar-year natural Grand Slam dies at the last hurdle.  Russia's Alexandr Medvedev comprehensively defeated Djokovic in the final of the US Open in straight sets.
  • Tomorrow will be the start of The Price is Right's 50th year on CBS.  And they're starting in style -- one cash game a day will be played for a $1,000,000 prize.  Unlike previous "Big Money Week"s, it won't be just Plinko (though that will be one of them) -- but Grand Game, Pay The Rent, Punch Board, and Time Is Money will be million-dollar games, one per day all this week.
  • The outstanding The Price Is Right: The Barker Era channel on Pluto is also celebrating today, with a "Big Bucks Blowout" of episodes with large cash winners and one winner whom, in Season 12, broke the all-time winnings record to that point in the series.
