The Rio Farce, Day One: All Medal Events Complete For The Day

So some updates:
  • USA shut out of gold in the pool, decent day in the men's gymnastics...
  • Three world records in the swimming meet:  One each for massive wins by Hungary and Australia, and one by Great Britain in the heats, backed up with nearly the same performance in his semifinal.
  • ... but if you don't believe Ugly American Syndrome is real, just ask Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium, who was willed by a loving crowd to a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 upset of Venus Williams, who committed over 50 unforced errors in the match and looked very unwell.
  • Dick-Waving Contest Update:  Leaders in golds after Day 1?  Australia and Hungary -- each picking up one gold in the pool and one out of it.  The only two countries to win two golds.  Total medal leader?  USA and Japan with 5.  USA with 4 silvers, Japan with 4 bronzes.
  • #NBCFail, as reported by DeadspinDeadspin reported all of what NBC edited out of the Opening Ceremony.  The speech by the head of the Rio Organizing Committee, Carlos Arthur Nuzman, was cropped.  Kip Keino's acceptance of the Olympic Laurel was denied us American viewers.  As noted last night, the Olympic Oaths were tossed out of the broadcast (for the record, the Officials' Oath was served by Martinho Nobre.  Adriana Santos did a THIRD Oath, in the name of all the coaches in the Games.).  And four minutes of the samba party NBC couldn't shut the fuck up about...
And a whole slew of stuff from Inside the Games:
  • Various robberies have been reported in the Olympic area.  The Great Britain team has reported the theft of at least nine swimming uniforms from the Olympic Village.  The Russian fan house has also been robbed, three laptops and a camera.
  • But that's nothing compared to Australian News Corp photographer Brett Costello, who has $40,000 of equipment and clothing robbed from him yesterday -- only to find one of the three thieves masquerading as him today in the archery venue!
  • From Omnisportsnews' Neil Barker, our worst aquatic Olympic fears, coming to pass:
  • Just across the Inside the Games wire at about 7:50 PM PDT:  Brazil did not do any pre-Olympic drug testing for about a month, blaming the WADA suspension (since lifted) of the Rio drug lab tasked for testing athletes for drugs.
  • AIBA, the international boxing federation, recently voted to end the use of headguards in all elite men's boxing matches -- including these Olympics.  And, two months ago, they also had the audacity to allow professionals to enter the Games as well.  Oh -- dear -- God.
  • There has been no announcement, but it is believed the WADA Report will result in the International Paralympic Committee expelling Russia from the 2016 Paralympics.
  • Finally, for now:  The Sunday Times reports Kenya is having more trouble.  On the same day that Kip Keino was given the Olympic Laurel for his contributions, Major Michael Rotich was sent home from the Games to face misconduct allegations.  He was the manager of the Kenyan team and was expected to march with them in the Opening Ceremony.  His charge?  Offering athletes advance notice of drug tests in exchange for payments up to 10,000 pounds.
