The Rio Farce, Day Four: Charging Through The Firewall???

I do not know what the fuck this company that's providing Internet service to the Excalibur Hotel (and, I guess, all of the MGM properties here in Las Vegas, NV) was thinking. For a day and a half, I can get to NBCOlympics.com, my e-mail, Twitter, Twitch, YouTube (that's at least three very heavy bandwidth users).

However, I cannot have gotten to: My blog, ESPN, SI, CNN, Inside The Games, my bank...

Really... So I guess I have Monday to catch up on, and some of this might be skeletal:

So, Monday:
  • Hoo boy, is it gonna be on with the Russians. The twice-banned doper Efimova was openly wagged at by Lily King of the United States after the semifinals...
  • … who then broke the Olympic record in winning the gold medal in the 100m breaststroke and made a point of stating she was proud she did it cleanly. Efimova won silver. Meili of the USA won bronze.
  • Another day, another African boxer, another sexual assault allegation in the Olympic Village. Now arrested is Jonas Junias Jonas, for attempted rape in the Olympic Village. Worse yet, he not only was competing for Namibia, he carried their flag in the Opening Ceremony!
  • US men's gymnastics crash out in the team competition. I guess the ladies will not have to share the stage on their 36-city victory tour.
  • #NBCFail Update: Simone Biles is an adopted child. The NBC announcers for the gymnastics yesterday made note of this, and at least one in a very insensitive manner. That announcer has apologized, but adoption advocates are having nothing of it. (Nor should they!)
  • And in the “Wait... WHAT???” Department: Enzo Lefort of France suffered an embarrassing accident on Sunday in the fencing competition... His cell phone fell out. This guy was actually so attached to his cellphone, he carried it onto the piste and tried to compete with it!
  • Dick-Waving Update for Monday: USA was shut out until several swimming medals, including two 1-3 finishes. A gold in the pool gave China 5 gold medals, tying the USA through Day 3. Total has USA at 19, China at 13, Japan and Russia at 10 each.
And, for Tuesday:
  • Yuri van Gelder of the Netherlands has been disqualified from the rings competition later this week.  His offense?  Drinking, which the Netherlands Olympic Committee has declared he must return home for.  I really have to start wondering how many of these Olympians, who've worked God knows how long for this moment, will be either sent home or arrested before their events.
  • Unintended Consequences Department:  The underwater camera used for water polo has been giving some....  interesting... results in the women's competition.  You can guess what they are.  (Deadspin)
  • Lilly King Update:  States she doesn't want any former dopers back in the Games, so then the interviewer asked about American Justin Gatlin -- to which King doubles down and says, basically, it doesn't matter what flag you are running under. She's not going to be popular with many fans for that one.  Too bad. (Deadspin)
  • Somebody at the shooting range on Saturday as an idiot!!!  Lost in the fact that the United States won the first gold medal of the Games was that China won silver and bronze -- and they were promptly rewarded with cheap, knock-off flags of their country raised at the medals ceremony.  The Chinese are pissed, and have every right to be.  (Deadspin explains how the Chinese were able to easily find out.)
  • Perhaps a large story here:  Majlinda Kelmendi is believed to have refused a drug test in June before the Games.  Kosovo's first gold medalist could have faced sanctions, but the International Judo Federation stands behind Kelmendi, especially when it comes to light that the person administering the test had no credentials on his or her person to do so!  (Inside The Games)
  • Jamel Chatbi has been disqualified from the steeplechase event for refusing three drug tests.  The Prime Minister of Italy (Chatbi races for Italy) ordered that he be allowed to go to Rio.  The tribunal set up for drug situations in Rio begged to differ.  (Inside The Games)
  • A judoka from Saudi Arabia withdrew from his event due to injury -- or at least that's what he and the Saudis are saying.  Many others, however, assert that Joud Fahmy withdrew to avoid a match with Israeli judoka Gili Cohen -- not unlike countries like Russia wanting to boycott medals ceremonies they'd share with Kosovo. (Inside The Games)
  • Brazil has finally broken through with it's first gold medal of it's home Games.  Judo, Rafael Silva.
  • Boxer Michael O'Reilly of Ireland is out of the Games for drugs -- admitting he took a supplement with a banned substance therein. (Inside The Games)
