The Rio Farce, Day 7 Noon PDT: Karma as the US Women Fall

  • No medal for US Women's Soccer.  Bounced by Sweden in penalty kicks this morning.  It doesn't happen all the time, but sometimes there is still karma in sports.  This whole Hope Solo thing (and I'm talking far more than the tweet and Zika chants and all that shit) basically overran the team.  One can only hope that this is the last Hope Solo is allowed to represent the United States in any realistic capacity.  Frankly, though, I don't see that happening.  The fact is that this whole drama with Hope Solo took a pretty good team (sans Carly Lloyd, the team really struggles) and just ran it straight into the ground.  Couldn't happen to a "nicer" goalkeeper.
  • The diving pool, scheduled to host the 3-meter springboard competition today, was closed this morning because the condition of the water was continuing to deteriorate.  Not only is the water green, and several of the divers apparently had itchy eyes, but at least one German diver said the entire building smelled like somebody farted!!!  (Deadspin)
  • There is a growing crisis of volunteers at some of the events.  Attendance of the people who agreed to volunteer across the board is down around 70%, and some places are as low as 20%.  (Deadspin)
  • In the growing interference of international politics to these Games, add Egyptian judoka Islam El Shehaby lost his first round match to Israeli Or Sasson.  He then broke major protocol by refusing to shake hands with Sasson, and the IOC is going to investigate and probably sanction him.  The International Judo Federation actually applauded El Shehaby for even taking the match, as many in Egypt urged him to forfeit rather than face an Israeli.  (Several news sources, Yardbarker being chief)
  • Gabby Douglas has replaced McKayla Maroney in an apparently unsportsmanlike display in the gymnastics.  Douglas has not had many positive experiences in Rio, being bounced out by her two teammates in the all-around (and apparently not showing appreciation for either) and breaking at least American protocol by not going hand-over-heart at the medal stand for the National Anthem.  She is qualified in one apparatus when the individual medals go up for grabs.  (Yardbarker)
  • Xinyi has been suspended for the drug positive and did not compete today.  Silvia Danekova of Bulgaria (steeplechase) and Tomasz Zielinski of Poland (weightlifting) have also been tossed for drugs.  (Inside the Games Day 7 blog)
