The Rio Farce, Day 8: 997... 998...

  • The United States won it's 21st gold medal of these Games in the rowing on the final day, winning the rowing eight-woman event on the final day of rowing.  This is significant because, entering Rio 2016, the USA had 977 recognized Olympic gold medals.  This means, probably tonight in the pool, the USA will win it's 1,000th gold medal.  For what it is worth...
  • An Olympic employee stole $20,000 at the Olympic Village by an Olympic Village employee.  The employee has been arrested and the money returned, but this is a continued no-confidence vote in the safety at Rio...  Denmark has also reported thefts by workers in the Village.  (Yahoo!)
  • And if that's not bad enough, yet ANOTHER controlled explosion of a suspicious package, this one at the International Broadcast Center.  (Inside the Games)
  • There was apparently one Russian track athlete who somehow got through the cracks, a long-jumper (Darya Klishna), but she has now been withdrawn due to information which indicates she also should've remained banned.  More tomorrow on this one.  (Inside the Games)  Klishna states she's been based in the United States for three years and is clean.  That MIGHT not be the best approach, given the USA's record for clean track and field.  *cough*
