- The bronze medal in #OlympicCoverageFail goes to the CBC and Elliote Friedman. Friedman spent the entire 200m men's individual medley confusing Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte. At the end, when Phelps won (to break that ancient record too!), Friedman thought Lochte had finally bested Phelps. He apologized, but social media has had a field day. (Yahoo!)
- Silver in #OlympicCoverageFail goes to the world feed for women's water polo. I do not know if the same occurs for the men, but there have been a number of... interesting... angles above the water as well -- as the aerodynamic nature of high-level water polo swimsuits for women tends to leave little to the imagination. Now, I will not lie and I will admit that a sexy babe in a swimsuit can be quite appealing, but I wanted to watch water polo! Or are we trying to make water polo into the next beach volleyball?
- But nothing tonight can compare to the gold medal winners and standard for #OlympicCoverageFail, #NBCFail. You see, we had a surprising and historic moment tonight. Simone Manuel took gold in the women's 200m individual medley. She's Black, and she's American, the first such woman to win an individual swimming gold for the United States. (Her and Canadian Penny Oleksiak touched at the same time, so both won gold.) So why did it take NBC an *HOUR* after the medal ceremony to finally show it? She won a precious gold medal to increase the American Dick-Measuring Contest lead (see below), so that would appear to be right up the alley of NBC... Except you thought it more important to LOLcat at the Russians failing to catch the two Americans in the women's all-around gymnastics tonight? I guess Manuel doesn't have a 36-city tour to go on after Rio -- and the fact she's Black doesn't help matters. (Deadspin, who reported that NBC did eventually air the ceremony.)
- Speaking of Lochte, he bleached his hair blonde for the Games. The pool he's swimming in is trying to bleach it green!!! (Inside the Games Day 7 blog)
- Late word has Chen Xinyi of China being the first swimmer to fail a drug test, this for a diuretic. She needs to appeal, as the 4th-place finisher in the 100m butterfly is also in the 50m freestyle. (Inside the Games Day 7 blog)
- And in the Great Dick-Measuring Contest: Judo, Swimming, and Gymnastics padded American leads on both fronts: 16 gold, and 38 total. Second in both is China: 11 and 30. Japan has 7 and 22, including 13 bronze.
The truth is not what actually happened. It's what you can ENFORCE happened. It's ALL enforcement.
