The Rio Farce, Day 7, Evening: Hold on a second, Ledecky is smashing the WR...

World record by 2 seconds.  Won the race by ELEVEN SECONDS PLUS.  (Probably about twenty meters.)

Good night, Katie Ledecky.

Well, from that to the bad (and some good) news:
  • SHUT THE FUCK UP, HOPE SOLO!!!  And get out of Brazil while you still can!!!  Had the audacity after Sweden won the penalty kicks to eliminate the USA after a 1-1 draw for 120 minutes to say the USA was beaten by "a bunch of cowards".  Well, bitch:  That "bunch of cowards" is probably going to get a medal and YOU AREN'T!!!!  And this is on USA Soccer too, for keeping you on the squad and not working on a suitable replacement all this time!
  • According to my research, tonight's upset win in the men's 100m butterfly as Singaporean Joseph Schooling outdueled three favorites (who all touched simultaneously for silver) is the first gold medal in any Olympic Games for the country of Singapore!
  • EDIT TO ADD:  Want an idea how big this is?  Should've seen the reaction they just showed at about 7:06 PM PDT of Singaporeans in the audience.  This is only their fifth Olympic medal, all in the Summer Games.
  • Is it just me, or am I about to get my wish about the men's basketball?  Only beat Serbia by three points today!
  • Scary moment in the weightlifting, but of a different kind.  Milko Tokola of Finland exerted so much in his final successful lift of 175 kilograms that he blacked out as he left the platform.  (Deadspin) Tokola finished ninth, and has said this is not anything new.
  • Ticket-scalping dispute between Ireland and the Rio 2016 officials after a ticket broker was given tickets to sell, and Kevin Mallon was arrested for trying to scalp them.  (Inside the Games)
  • Track and field started today, with a massive vote of no confidence to the entire competition.  Almaz Ayana of Kenya broke the world record at 10,000 meters and the heptathlon featured the best high-jump scores ever done in major competition of the seven-event women's heptathlon.  Sadly, the Olympic Stadium was only 60-65% full for the first two sessions.  (Inside the Games)
  • The Rio Paralympics, not surprisingly, are in trouble.  Word, now, is that events or services may need to be cut to cut costs, according to Inside the Games.  Sponsors are still being sought.  Continuing evidence that the world, not just the rank-and-file of the USA bandwagon, cares little for the handi-capable athletes of the Paralympics.
