According to umpire-school YouTube channel Close Call Sports, there have been at least 23 ejections this season already.
Last year, ejection #23 was May 3rd.
Two years ago, May 2nd.
Yeah, it does sound like (at least in the eyes of some apologists) "The Ump Show" is in full effect.
But there's another one I want to talk about: Max Scherzer, because he did not believe he would get a fair hearing with MLB's arbitrators on his appeal of the suspension, chose not to.
And, in so doing, he has blown up his career.
Because, regardless of the truth of the statement, now or previous, he is going to be viewed as a cheat.
He is third on the active list for wins with 203, if you believe that stat.
And now, against regardless of truth: No one will give that sufficient merit, because now people are going to take a look at, at the least, his entire recent career.
Especially if his claim of "rosin and sweat" is true, he had to appeal that, regardless. Now, especially with the umpire's report that his hands were the stickiest he'd ever felt in the three years of the MLB inspection directive, the only assumption we can now make is that he definitely was doctoring the ball.
And you KNOW people are going to look at this even harder once he comes back.
