The COVIDLympics, Day Ten Part Two: The Bigots' Victory Lap

  • Lauren Hubbard, the transgender weightlifter from New Zealand, failed her opening weight three times in the competition.
  • Megan Rapinoe and the USWNT's delusion of winning a gold medal (that's not bigotry in me saying it, by the way -- the team was a complete mess the entire tournament!!!) was finally smashed in the semifinal by Canada, a 1-0 victory to the Maple Leafs sends them to the final.
  • However, transgender and non-binary history has been made on Day Ten:  The first-ever transgender and non-binary medal has been clinched by women's soccer player Quinn from Canada.  They won at least a silver by defeating the USA, and will go for gold against heavy-favorite Sweden on Wednesday.
  • First track and field gold for the USA in the women's discus.
  • Krystsina Tsimanoskaya, the Belarussian sprinter seeking asylum, has been given an asylum visa to relocate to Poland.
  • The American men's basketball debacle draws Spain in it's quarterfinal -- Jerry Colangelo steps down the next time they lose or if they win the gold medal.
Inside The Games for day ten:
  • The Australian delegation will be required to quarantine for two weeks upon return from the Games.  This, with China now almost reverting back to January, 2020 lockdown levels.  We're not getting a handle on this coronavirus shit at all!!!
  • China has broken it's record in the weightlifting -- six Olympic golds so far.
  • Monday started with the announcement of 17 more Olympic COVID-19 positives.  This is basically trying to survive the next week without a destructive outbreak...
  • No action will be taken against Raven Saunders for her "X" protest on the medal stand, according to the USOC.
  • Simone Biles will attempt to complete the balance beam event tomorrow night.
  • A Greek artistic swimmer has tested positive for COVID-19 and is out of the competition.
Other news from Reddit:
  • Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands won the women's 5000m track event on Day Ten.  The significant part is she intends to try for an unheard-of triple:  It's not that uncommon to try to win the 5000 and 10000.  What's the real trick is winning the 1500 on top of it -- and she's favored in all three!
The National Dick-Waving Contest:
  • It's basically all over but the shouting for the gold total, I believe.  China wins five today to the USA's two, and the margin is now SEVEN with six days to go.  China 29 golds, USA 22, Japan 17, Australia 14, Illegal Russian Team 12, Great Britain 11.
  • In the total, the USA's advantage is only two now.  USA 64, China 62, Illegal Russian Team 50, Great Britain 35, Japan and Australia 33 each.
  • 197 of the 339 events have been completed.
  • 57 nations have now won gold medals, two fewer than Rio, three more than London.
  • 80 nations now are on the table, six fewer than Rio, four fewer than London.
  • No further medal or gold maidens broken (still three gold maidens and two medal maidens for the Games in total).
  • I don't think a lot of people are getting how bad this is getting.  For the USA not to have it's lowest gold-medal total since 1936 (!!), it must win ten more to match Melbourne's total of 32.
  • A lot of people are going to point to time difference -- and it is true that the last two times the USA team won fewer than 100 in the total were both Asian-hosted Games (94 in Seoul, 93 in Sydney -- and that gold and total in Sydney was still enough to top the table!).  That said, however, you'd think they had 7-8 years to actively start preparing, knowing this has been a problem in the past!
