The COVIDLympics, Day Sixteen, Competition Portion

  • We came within an eyelash of a gold-medal maiden being broken, and it was lost in the most incredible of ways.  In the new karate competition, Saudi Arabia had Tareg Hamadi, and he was facing Sajad Ganjzadeh of Iran.  And about a minute in, a hard kick to the chest knocked the wind clear out of Ganjzadeh, ending the bout.
  • In boxing,a knockout wins the fight.  In judo, choking out your opponent with a judo move wins the fight.
  • But there's a problem.  Since Karate, even the "kumite" fights, is a form competition only and considered a form of self-defense (the word "karate" means "empty hand"), knocking your opponent out LOSES THE FIGHT!!!  Ganjzadeh wins gold, even though he was clearly outclassed, and knocked out!
  • You have gotta be kidding me -- they're actually gonna DO IT?  Shock win by Jennifer Valente in the final event of the cycling, the four-discipline women's Omnium event, has propelled the USA to the top of the medal table.  They win the medal table if they win women's volleyball over Brazil, win either of the boxing finals, or the one Chinese female boxer loses hers.
  • And at 2:59 PM, Sunday, the final day of competition, with the victory of the women's volleyball team, the USA...  somehow...  pulls out the medal table victory.
  • For the fourth consecutive Olympics, the men's boxing team cannot win a gold medal, DOMINATED in their two fights today.
