The COVIDLympics, Day Fourteen: The Chickens Coming Home To Roost???

  • Three Australian women's rugby players have been banned from their team for the first of three matches in their annual Bledisloe Cup series for their misconduct associated with a post-curfew alcohol incident in the Olympic Village.
  • The men's rugby team and women's soccer team are being investigated by Australian officials as well -- not only for that, but for an apparent "Plane Ride From Hell" back home to Australia.
  • This, in addition to reports of damage to the Olympic Village and their rooms by Australian athletes.
  • Nancy Armour of USA Today says that those who have cheered against the USWNT for their politics "are not American".  I don't think the Fat Orange Pig has an issue with that -- he and his wish to change, and VIOLENTLY, what it means to be an American!
  • The return of Simone Biles at least cut the losses for Night 12 of NBC primetime Olympic coverage to only 32%, the lowest such decline of the entire Games vs. Rio.  The three nights where women's gymnastics truly headlined (the prelim team with Biles and Sunisa Lee winning the all-around) are, and by quite a distance, the best-viewed nights of these Games.  (Sports Media Watch)
  • The IOC has thrown out of the Games two of the Belarussian sprinter's coaches due to their conduct.
Inside the Games...
  • In a move which will see sighs of relief, the new chairwoman of the IOC Athletes Committee is Finland's Emma Terho, an ice-hockey player.
  • The Moldovan Olympic Committee President has been urged to resign by legislators at home because one of his subordinates in the delegation was thrown out of the Games for violation of COVID protocols.
  • It appears the dreaded "alcohol sensitivity training" will be the punishment, along with a stiff rebuke, for a number of Australia's Olympic rugby contingent, for their conduct on the way home.
  • The IOC has ordered the Tokyo Committee not to commemorate the Hiroshima bombings, which 76th anniversary is Day 15 of the Games.
  • It appears that 21 year-old Gable Dan Stevenson has a WWE future if he wants it -- he just won the heavyweight wrestling title at these Games in a point-filled affair.
  • The German cycling coach thrown out for his "camel riders" joke has been banned until 2022 by world cycling authorities.
Medal stuff...
  • Before I get to the count, history tonight on the soccer pitch.  Quinn became the first transgender and non-binary person to not only win an Olympic medal, but an Olympic gold medal when Canada upset Sweden to win women's soccer.
  • 35 gold medals up for grabs Saturday.  14 on Sunday.  49 left out of the 339.
  • And the gold count is:  China 36, USA 31, Japan 24, Great Britain 18, Illegal Russian Team and Australia 17 each.
  • Total:  USA 98, China 79, Illegal Russian Team 62, Great Britain 58, Japan 51, Australia 44.
  • 63 nations, a record by several, have won gold medals in these Games.  No additional on Day 14.
  • An 89th nation has added their name to the list for the medal table for the Games -- that also is a new Olympic record.
  • I'm trying to figure out, with as few events as remain, how the USA could even make up the five, plus probably two or three more (women's boxing, 10m men's diving) China could win... I don't see it.  USA still needs one more gold to match their total from Melbourne.
