3/9/20 Coronavirus update

  • It happened.  For the first time, the circuit-breaker hit pretty much off the top of the session as the stock market fell 7% pretty much instantaneously.  And it held about there.  
  • The NBA's decision to go fanless is probably going to come down to a Wednesday conference call with the owners.  Word is, it's probably a go.
  • About an hour ago, the Italian prime minister placed the entire country of Italy under quarantine.
  • Six were killed in Italian prison riots.
  • Finally, Serie A has been shelved.  Took the nationwide quarantine to do it, but Italian soccer is now done for the foreseeable.
  • In another level of possible exposure for the President, it appears the two previously-mentioned Congressmen under self-quarantine both had social contact with President Trump.
  • And now you can add the top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee to the list:  Doug Collins apparently may have been exposed at the recent Conservative Political Action Conference. 
  • As of Monday evening, the number of members of Congress which are self-quarantining against the virus is up to six.
  • California-Berkeley has become the third Pac-12 school to cancel all in-person classes until at least their Spring Break is over.
  • USC is now the fourth, at least until March 23rd.
  • Additional colleges heading to online/remote-only:  Vanderbilt (rest of the month), Ohio State, Amherst College (who is clearing all students from the campus as of the 16th!), San Francisco State, Rice, San Jose State
  • University of California-San Diego is going online-only for it's entire spring quarter.
  • EDIT TO ADD:  About 4:15 PM PDT, all of the major in-progess professional sports leagues released a joint statement banning all non-essential access to the locker rooms.  That's MLB, NHL, NBA, Major League Soccer. (ESPN
  • The article also notes that the upcoming NCAA Division I Hockey playoff series between Rochester Polytechnic and Harvard will be played without fans.
  • Here is a list ESPN is keeping of all postponed events. 
  • "Jeopardy" and "Wheel of Fortune", the two biggest American game shows, are now both taping without audiences.
  • Santa Clara County has just banned all official gatherings over 1,000 people, including conventions.  Current effect is three weeks.
  • Pearl Jam has scrapped it's 2020 tour. 
  • South Boston has cancelled it's Saint Patrick's Day Parade.
  • The Coachella music festival is now off til at least October.
