3/11/20 Coronavirus Updates
- The annual commemoration of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami usually held today was not held.
- The largest gaming convention in America, E3, was officially scrapped. And that's JUNE...
- The World Health Organization finally declared this crap a pandemic, weeks after it should've.
- ... and the Dow Jones is tanking about 5% again as a result.
- The director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases today officially told a Congressional hearing (just before the NBA Board of Governors meeting) that the only way to continue their season was fanless.
- The Warriors and the Chase Center have given in to the City and County of San Francisco:
Tomorrow night's Warriors-Nets game will be fanless. The first professional sporting event to be made fanless under this situation.
The G League game between the affiliates of the Warriors and of the Spurs has not only been moved to Santa Cruz, but will be fanless. (See above -- both the NBA and G-League seasons are now in suspension.)
- Concerts by Tame Impala and Bell Biv Devoe have been postponed.
- A concert by Post Malone will either be cancelled or postponed.
- The Bay Bridge Pre-Season Series game in San Francisco for the 24th has been cancelled -- they're thinking of possibly doing something else.
- BOOM! There just went March Madness.
Governor of the State of Ohio will sign an order today prohibiting fans at either the First Four matches in Dayton or the first two rounds-pods matches in Cleveland. This will undoubtably force the NCAA's hand to either make the entire tournament fanless or just cancel it altogether. (Again, see above -- all March Madness, if it's played at all, will be fanless.)
- And a similar BOOM! for Major League Baseball. The Seattle Mariners will be forced to move their first seven games of the regular season, which were scheduled as a homestand in Seattle, due to the edicts surrounding the Coronavirus. I have to think the day is coming there will be a full cancellation of a significant portion, if not all, of MLB's regular season.
- The Ivy League has cancelled all interscholastic sports for the remainder of the school year.
- The University of Southern California has banned all fans from all home events through the end of the month.
- The city of Seattle has just closed all school for two weeks, minimum.
- Denmark is closing all non-essential services for two weeks.
- Poland is closing all schools for some period of time.
- One of the third-tier (mid-level one-bid conference teams) tournaments, the CBI, has called off the 2020 tournament.
- New York City has finally cancelled it's St. Patrick's Day parade for the first time in 250 years.
- The World Figure Skating Championships have been called off.
