And don't forget the fallout from "The Fraud of the Century"...
But, just the last couple of days, I now see at least three other stories (in three different sports!) to indicate just how out of control things are getting in this crazy world.
- New Britain, CT: A golfer is asked to speed up his play. Not uncommon, especially when the USGA themselves made a national issue of it in commercials ("While We're Young") and PSAs during a recent US Open. Having said golfer go to his cart and pull a GUN is not what I think the USGA (or the local police, who have arrested the guy -- who had a legal permit for the gun until the arrest!) had in mind for a response. Doubly so when he showed the gun in a menacing manner to the second group who decided to complain about his slow play.
- Speaking of guns where they shouldn't be, even with the guy being permitted to have one, Tampa Bay, FL: A Lightning fan faces a misdemeanor charge of bringing a gun to a sporting event when he was found to have dropped his weapon in the bathroom. No, not THAT weapon... His gun!! Like the other story, he had a permit. Had he not, it would've been a felony.
- To show how crazy Arena Football can continue to be, we go back to Deadspin and head to Portland: Quincy Butler has been "reassigned" by the league (read: BANNED) for protesting an ejection penalty by throwing his helmet into the crowd -- and conking a child with it! This piece of work was banned from the country of Canada and thrown out of the CFL (he was with Calgary) just seven months ago after a conviction for assault of a cab driver! No word on final discipline or criminal charges, but, technically, this would be a violation of the 18 months of probation in Canada for the cab-driver assault!
