But Deadspin (hat-tip to my anonymous friend again!) reports today that the NFL, as part of recruiting efforts for the US military, had it's teams receive over $5 million (of your tax money) the last four years as part of supposed tributes to the military of local areas of the teams. Most of the money came from recruiting coffers supporting the National Guard.
Fourteen teams received the money, according to NJ.com:
- Atlanta: $1,095,000
- Baltimore: $884,500
- Buffalo: $429,000
- Cincinnati: $137,960
- Cleveland: $22,500 -- from the Air Force.
- Dallas: $62,500
- Green Bay: $600,000
- Indianapolis: $620,000 -- $20,000 from the Air Force
- Kansas City: $250,000 (though I am not clear if this isn't one contract for half of this duplicated)
- Miami: $20,000 -- from the Air Force
- Minnesota: $605,000
- New York Jets: $377,500
- Pittsburgh: $36,000 -- $27,000 from the Air Force and $9,000 from Fort Knox
- St. Louis: $60,000
