May 9, 2023 News and Notes

  • Monday night was the beginning of a Jeopardy ultra-tournament on ABC.  For the next two weeks, six Jeopardy Masters will compete, the winner of the two-game final to receive $500,000, the "Alex Trebek Trophy", and a sitting invitation to return for next year's tournament.
  • The six players are six of the biggest winners of the last several seasons:
    • James Holzhauer
    • Amy Schneider
    • Andrew He
    • Matt Amodio
    • Mattea Roach
    • and Sam Buttrey
  • The first seven days will feature various combinations of the six facing each other in single games.  3 points will go to the winning player.  1 point for second, 0 for third.
  • After seven days, the bottom two players are eliminated ($50,000 for sixth, $75,000 for fifth).  If players are tied after the seven days, the tiebreakers go as follows until broken...
    • Most wins between the tied players
    • Total correct responses
    • Highest Coryat Score:  The first official recognition of the Coryat Score, which is the total score one gets if Daily Doubles are ignored.  Raw question values only.
    • Total score without Final Jeopardy
  • The four remaining players play, in combinations of three, for the semifinals.  Same points and tiebreakers apply.  Lowest semifinal scorer wins $100,000 for fourth place.
  • Regular two-game total point final.  $500,000 and the Trebek Trophy for the winner, $250,000 for second, $150,000 for third.
  • In a move many Jeopardy! fans may NOT care for, they're experimenting with something for the ABC tournament:  Home viewers will be shown where each round's Daily Doubles are.  I don't know about this, people...  I really do not.  Especially with how volatile a player like James is with the Daily Doubles, a lot of watching his matches was the dramatic nature of who was going to find them, especially in Double.
  • "The Jeopardy Fan"'s Andy Saunders has Holzhauer a slight favorite to win the tournament, with Amodio right on his heels and Schneider not far behind.
  • Do I dare post them, knowing these post at midnight??  I will, at least for Day 1:
    • Andrew had a near-lockout to win the three points in Game 1 over Amy (1) and Matt (0).
    • Guess who found the Daily Doubles in Double in Game 2, after a close Jeopardy round?  James (3) locks out Sam (1) and Mattea (0).
Other stuff:
  • Oh, Bills fans are not gonna be happy with THIS ONE:  Matt Araiza, the probable cause of the NFL's rigging the Bills out of the playoffs, is now being said by prosecutors in San Diego he was NOT present at the purported San Diego State gang rapes.
  • Bob Huggins, coach at West Virginia, made a pair of gay slurs against Xavier University -- situation is under review by West Virginia University.
  • It's official:  There was fire with that smoke, according to the Colts.  They have asked for a tampering review by the NFL vis-a-vis retired quarterback Andrew Luck.  The Washington Commanders (oh gee, what a fucking shock!!!) are accused.
  • The final total for the 2023 Fantasy Faire for Second Life shows a grand total, raised for the American Cancer Society, of 29,542,609 Lindens, the in-world currency.
    • At the exchange rate of 250 Lindens per US dollar, the final total converts to $118,170.44.
    • It also represents that the Fairelanders have now raised three-quarters of a million dollars for the American Cancer Society in the 15 years of the Faire.
  • Denny Crum has died, the long-time coach of Louisville basketball.
  • Stanley Berryhill has become the third Detroit Lion suspended for sports betting to be fired from the team.  Only 2022 first-rounder Jameson Williams remains with the team.
