Rapidly developing story...
The University of Alabama has FIRED it's baseball coach, Brad Bohannon. And it apparently has something to do with the gambling probe.
Also, New Jersey and Pennsylvania have now also stopped all wagering on Alabama baseball games.
And we may now have our answer: It appears he was actually involved in whatever wagering was going on, at least two sources familiar have reported to The Athletic:
OH MY...
This almost HAS TO mean that they believe Bohannon was actually placing wagers on that game. If it were simply the information that Bohannon had scratched his pitcher, then (unless Ohio state sportsbooks are not like Vegas in their baseball House Rules) the game would simply be "No Action", all wagers refunded.
EDIT TO ADD circa 2 PM Pacific: I now believe, about 80-20/85-15, Bohannon was having bets placed on his behalf against the Crimson Tide in that game.
2:15 PM Pacific: Surveillance video at Great American Ballpark indicates that the person who was placing the wagers was in continual communication with Bohannon, ESPN reports from multiple sources. This means Sports Bribery, Conspiracy To Commit A Federal Offense, various violations of Ohio law (including the transmission of wagering data by phone, illegal (I know) in Nevada at the very least, would think Ohio's laws are similar), and now you have to get Major League Baseball involved, if but only if to ensure the party involved in this incident was not in an employ of the Cincinnati Reds or another MLB entity.
2:25 Pacific: The ESPN article confirms the Cincinnati bets were AGAINST Alabama -- two of them. One on the direct result of the contest, the other a parlay in which Alabama losing was one leg of it. The article also indicates that it appears suspicious bets were also placed on the game in Indiana, which has also halted all Crimson Tide baseball action, becoming at least the fourth state to do so.
3 PM Pacific: Word from ESPN's David Purdum that records indicate this is NOT the first game so involved. Stay tuned!
