May 3, 2023 News and Notes

  • Not quite sure yet if this would impact the Chiefs -- probably not, but it's close if not...  Patrick Mahomes' brother has been arrested for sexual battery.
    • In an indication Jackson's brother needs to beat the shit out of him, Deadspin calls the accused a "wannabe influencer".  OUCH!!!
  • Getting down to the end of it for Fantasy Faire.  Today is Day 14, and the Fairelanders blog reports their total as of the end of Day 13 is now just over $58,000.
  • They are reporting they believe they have the man who shot and killed five near Houston over the guy firing off his AR-15 and disturbing everybody.
  • And another mass shooting, and possibly women-rights motivated:  A Black man in his 20's is on the run after a mass shooting of five woman (at least) at a family-health clinic near Atlanta.
  • The Treasury Department believes Default Date (and victory date for the Freedom Caucus) is June 1st.
  • Two more US Olympians died yesterday.
    • Calvin Davis, a 1996 bronze medalist at the 400 meter hurdles and a relay specialist, passed at 51.
    • Torie Bowie, a 2016 triple medalist (one of each, gold in the 4X100 relay) was only 32.
  • The 2023 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees are out:
    • Kate Bush
    • Missy Elliott
    • Sheryl Crow
    • George Michael
    • The Spinners
    • Rage Against The Machine
    • Willie Nelson
  • We now have two additional pieces of information regarding the termination of baseball betting on the University of Alabama.
    • The large bets placed appear to have been placed at or near Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati (indicating they probably were mobile if there isn't a sportsbook at the Reds' stadium).
    • The bets came after the Crimson Tide scratched their scheduled starting pitcher.
    • I'm not buying this.  This would appear to be either an attempt to reverse possibly losing bets (by the casino) or a "no action" situation, NOT an accusation of match-fixing, etc. through suspicious betting patterns.
  • The horse death toll at Churchill Downs on Derby Week is now up to four in the last five days.
  • And it appears Max Scherzer's credible career is over.
    • Spin rate demonstrably down from before the suspension.
    • And got shelled by the Tigers.  3 1/3, 6 runs, all earned, three strikeouts, two jacks.
    • Detroit beat the Mets 8-1.
  • Former champion boxer Deontay Wilder arrested in LA Wednesday morning -- obscured license plate, illegally tinted windows, and they found an illegal firearm in the car to boot!
