Original report: 1:39 PM Pacific
The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission is investigating the Iowa baseball program after four players (including the team's star slugger) were benched for a weekend series with Ohio State (which Iowa won two of three).
Potential NCAA rules violations are the reason which was given. That would appear to be somewhat common, unless the rules violations run into the purview of the IRGC.
Edit to add: 4:07 PM Pacific (ESPN)
We found out the potential violation.
Oh, forget just one sport. Try 26 Iowa athletes across five sports and at least one member of the athletic staff -- and that's just the University of Iowa!!
15 more at Iowa State across three sports. Both involve football, wrestling, and track athletes. Iowa has baseball and men's basketball too!
In fact, the 26 is only a "current athlete" total. The number of red flags regarding gambling among athletes at the Iowa program is OVER A HUNDRED.
No word, YET, on whether people were betting on their own games.
It is NCAA-illegal to bet on any sport in which the NCAA holds a championship -- at any level of the sport. Meaning that NCAA athletes cannot bet on the NFL, NBA, etc.
