Fresno State at Nebraska in week one today.
Nebraska's punter Sam Foltz was killed in a tragic car accident five months ago.
The first time the punt team was required for the Cornhuskers, this happened:
Everyone knew, even the Fresno State players who were saluting and applauding the gesture and encouraging the crowd to pay tribute to Foltz.
Then the play clock ran out, and a penalty was called...
... one Fresno State IMMEDIATELY declined (the recast of the play as 4th and 9 was an error on the part of the telecast).
The Big Ten Network, in their "Final Drive" post-week summary of the games, applauded Fresno State for their act of sportsmanship and understanding of the situation.
We will see far too few of these this season, at all levels.
EDIT TO ADD: I'd be remiss if I didn't add this:
We had to take a delay of game, weren't able to get all 11 guys out to punt in time.— Nebraska Football (@HuskerFBNation) September 4, 2016
