February 4, 2023 News and Notes

  • Long COVID strikes again.  An amateur player's caddy at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am had to force play to be stopped for an hour yesterday -- heart attack.  I am not, in any way, going to dispute the last three years have greatly increased the incidence of the more casual heart attack, even in people in otherwise good health!  I just think it's long COVID.
  • Dillon Brooks of the Grizzlies was suspended one game for a fight with Donovan Mitchell of the Cavaliers Thursday...
  • ... and the league will have a busy Saturday, as a scrap between the Timberwolves and Magic Friday night saw five players ejected!
  • And here are those suspensions:  Mo Bamba (ORL) gets four games, Austin Rivers (MIN) three, Jalen Suggs (ORL) one.
  • And Bamba should've gotten a LOT more than that -- he tried to go after Rivers in the locker room area afterward and shoved a security guard.  If I'm the NBA, that bidding starts at TEN.
  • And then the social media altercation afterward.  Ten is a month...  Five weeks?  Maybe six?
  • Lakers tickets are through the roof -- and there's a very good reason why (and it's not yesterday's "He's A Laker" trend for Kyrie Irving!)...
  • LeBron James is now just over 60 points away from breaking one of sports' most sacred records -- the all-time scoring record of the NBA, which is held by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
  • The Lakers are on the fifth game of an extended road trip in New Orleans this afternoon.
  • Their next two games are at home:  Tuesday against Oklahoma City, Thursday against Milwaukee.  LeBron is expected to break the record in one of those two contests.
  • After today's loss in New Orleans, James is 36 away.
  • Mount Washington in New Hampshire set a record last night -- coldest wind chill in history at MINUS ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHT.  Comparable to the temperature on the planet of Mars!
