But the pro-Mignogna faction is celebrating the imminent death of Funimation Pictures, with the latest round of revelations coming from what is now being referred to as #FuniLeaks.
That there exist (and are now publicly available on the Internet) racy/ribald blooper reels which have been entered as evidence in the Mignogna civil trial -- which will have a major SLAPP hearing in Texas this Friday.
Too bad none of this matters, end of the day.
First, word has gotten back to the major franchise holder of the largest franchise Funimation pictures has -- Dragon Ball's Toei Animation, and they are not happy. There is even a rumor that they are preparing to pull the license and sell it to it's major competitor, online streamer Crunchyroll.
Losing that license might mean Funimation doesn't even live to see the trial.
But the worst part is something that I don't think a lot of the #IStandWithVic crowd realizes if the people who want to #KickVic see what's going on.
And it stems from THIS, back from March (which has also been entered as evidence in the trial):
Michele Specht was his fiance, for quite a number of years. In fact, how I started coming on to this story was just wondering, one day this late winter, how the relationship between the two was going. The full Michelle Specht email, it’s brutal... but... notice who she CC’d? Anyone familiar? Perhaps a certain “Vic whisperer” and makeup artist turned witness consultant? 🤔 pic.twitter.com/JXmbLroJBH— Zach Viana (@ZachViana) July 20, 2019
It is very difficult to read from the picture, but this is a letter lambasting Vic for basically a myriad of offenses against their relationship.
I, however, want to point out the following quote from said letter:
"You used your STC [Star Trek Continues, the Star Trek web-fan series in which Mignogna played Captain Kirk] and con[vention] buddies as regular "wingmen" to arrange these hook-ups..."
Specht makes a number of charges (including, I believe, at least one statutory rape charge) in the e-mail. At least one friend of Vic is all but outed as part of this (STC Spock Todd Haberkorn, tied with a professional cosplayer in this regard). I think one long-time Funimation voice actress may want a VERY close eye on all of this -- and possibly a divorce lawyer on speed-dial...
Especially if we're now at the point it's come out that sexual innuendos at Funimation are a condition of employment at the studio -- there is some allegation that the hypocrisy goes all the way to the level of a casting couch.
Here's the problem I have with all the #IStandWithVic crowd in this regard:
Unless you are willing to charge that the woman, for whom more than half a decade was to be Mignogna's wife, is lying through her teeth: How would it not stand to reason for Specht charging that a sexual harassment and worse culture was effectively rampant at Funimation Pictures, far beyond just Mignogna, and probably extending all the way to Funimation head Gen Fukunaga (who I think had best lawyer up himself -- even if he wins this lawsuit, Sony is probably going to want some of their purchase price back from the purchase of Funimation!)?
Wouldn't the standard that the TCPA motion passing (that of, on top of preponderance of the evidence of the merits of the case, preponderance of the evidence the situation was done with malice against Mignogna as a public figure) be fairly quickly and easily provable here?
Have you now all but forced Funimation's hand to effectively scorched-Earth Mignogna, up to and including eventual criminal charges, when found within the statute of limitations??
If Vic wins, what's left of Funimation probably will have to liquidate.
If Vic loses, there's a good chance the entire fandom is exposed to the point there may not be ANYTHING left.
Stay tuned.
